Editorial Photography: Artist Larry Ortega for Phoenix Home & Garden

There are photoshoots… and then there are moments that remind you exactly why you love what you do, especially when it involves stepping into the shadows to find the light. Walking into Larry Ortega’s creative space for this Phoenix Home & Garden feature felt less like a standard assignment and more like entering a modern-day alchemist’s lab.

The Luminescent World of Larry Ortega

Larry Ortega is a visionary whose work truly has to be seen to be believed. As a master of resin art, he creates sculptures that don’t just sit in a room they command it. Larry has this focused, quiet energy that matches the intensity of his art; he’s someone who deeply understands the chemistry and the soul behind every piece he pours.

Capturing Art That Breathes in the Dark

This session was designed specifically for a magazine feature, which meant we needed to tell a complex story through a single lens. We weren’t just photographing a person; we were documenting the relationship between the creator and his glowing creations. While I spend many of my days crafting professional headshots that rely on traditional lighting, this shoot required us to embrace the “dark” to let Larry’s luminescent sculptures really sing.

Finding the Light in the Shadows

Creatively, this was such an exhilarating challenge. To capture the “luminescent” quality of Larry’s resin art, we had to carefully balance ambient darkness with just enough light to define his features without washing out the sculptures’ natural glow. I focused on the movement and the texture of the resin, ensuring that the camera captured that specific, otherworldly radiance that makes his work a staple in luxury Arizona homes.

Why This Creative Exchange Stayed With Me

Photographing Larry was a deeply meaningful experience because it pushed my own boundaries as an artist. There is a beautiful parallel between his work and mine; we are both, in our own ways, obsessed with how light interacts with the world around us. Seeing his passion for his craft reminded me of the importance of staying curious and always looking for the “glow” in every subject I photograph.

I left this session feeling incredibly inspired by the way Larry sees the world. It was a privilege to help tell his story and to document the incredible talent that makes our Phoenix art community so vibrant and unique.
