There are photoshoots and then there are moments that remind me exactly why I love what I do. Photographing Carolann Tutera was one of those sessions an opportunity to capture not only a remarkable woman but the confidence, warmth, and purpose behind everything she has built.
A Woman Who Has Helped Change the Conversation Around Hormonal Health
When I photograph someone who has spent years building something meaningful, I always want the images to reflect more than their professional accomplishments. Carolann Tutera, founder and CEO of Tutera Medical and SottoPelle, has dedicated her career to an area of medicine centered around hormonal health through mid and later life.
What stood out to me was the sense of purpose behind her work. Her journey has helped bring greater attention to hormone health as part of the conversation around living well as we age and I wanted that sense of confidence and leadership to come through naturally in every photograph.
Creating Images That Feel as Accomplished as She Is
The goal of the session was to create sophisticated, expressive imagery that felt polished without losing Carolann’s personality. For me, that balance is incredibly important. The strongest branding portraits aren’t simply about looking professional they should give you a feeling about the person before you even read their story.
I approached the session with that in mind, looking for expressions, posture and small moments that communicated confidence while still feeling genuine. The result was imagery that could work beautifully across editorial features, personal branding, professional profiles and other platforms where Carolann’s story deserves to be seen.
Finding the Confidence Between the Poses
During a session like this, I’m always watching for the moments between the obvious poses. A slight change in expression, the way someone carries themselves or a relaxed interaction can completely transform an image.
That was especially true with Carolann. I wanted the photographs to feel sophisticated and elevated but never overly staged. My focus was on creating portraits with presence images that communicate leadership while still allowing her personality to shine through.
Why Sessions Like This Stay With Me
Photographing accomplished women is always a meaningful experience for me. I get to step into their world for a little while, hear pieces of their story and translate what makes them unique into photographs.
Carolann’s session reminded me that great photography can do more than document success. It can capture the confidence behind the journey and create an image that makes someone stop, look and want to know the story behind it.
